Late 60’s early 70’s progressive jazz rock group from Dinnington/Anston in South Yorkshire just a few miles over the border from Worksop.
Line up:
David Wright – Bass
Jim Sarvent – Vocals, Recorder, Guitar, Castanets
Brian Garner – Lead Guitar
Tommy Hart – Drums
Brian Garner was from Dinnington, Tommy Hart from Whiston and David and Jim both from Aston. Dave Wright was the main writer. All four members were members of the North and South Anston Youth Centre in 1969 and they practiced there on Wednesday evenings.
After playing an all nighter in Buxton in 1969 they were asked to make a tape which they recorded in Sheffield. The Buxton Festival was at the Pavilion Gardens at the end of September 1969. Organised by Buxton Rugby Union FC and attended by 5,000 people it was a showcase for the new progressive and blues rock bands of the late sixties. Without incident bands included:
Spirit of John Morgan
Glass Menagerie
East of Eden
Fleetwood Mac
Edgar Broughton Band
As part of the event, at the nearby Playhouse, 1,000 crammed in to see local acts Weeping Sac, Shape of the Rain (Chesterfield), Grisby Dyke, Jugular Vein, Gulf Stream Drift and two poets.
Weeping Sac also played alongside Retford rock group Griefs Child at Retford Town Hall. They guested on John Peels Top Gear show. They also played the Black Swan (Dirty Duck) in Sheffield. In June 1970 they were invited to another festival at the Buxton Pavilion Gardens with a stellar line up including Taste, Colosseum, Atomic Rooster and many more. They split up later in 1970 and in Jim Sarvent (Flautist) was involved in DJing at The Masons Arms, Retford for a while.
David Wright recalled “If I recall correctly, around 1969 you (John Parr) visited The Swan Inn once or twice to see my band Weeping Sac rehearsing. Great that you made the big time“.
