A wild group fronted by Nick Turner, who many will remember as the proprietor of the Nottingham city centre venue “The Chameleon” during the 21st century and also in groups “The Frogs” in the eighties and “Big Bandit”.
Mick Gorman had played in Tynd Sluj circa 1969-70 and ‘Love and Confusion’ before that. He became friends with Nick Turner who had been playing as Black Belch, jamming and improvising in a pub, the Cricketers Rest on Kirkewhite Street in the ‘Medders’, often just reciting poetry with harmonica accompaniment. A loose Beefheart style blues improvisational outfit, the High Bread Mishap line up was fairly fluid and personnel came and went. The last line up featured Wayne Evans (from The Tadpoles) and eventually Mick Barratt (from Hogweed). As Wayne remembers “Nick wrote lyrics and jammed them out Beefheart blues style. Songs we did were ‘Willie the Pimp‘ (Zappa/Beefheart), ‘Well, Well, Well‘ (John Lennon), ‘Dancing in the street‘ (Martha Reeves & The Vandellas), ‘Statesborough Blues‘ (Taj Mahal), ‘Butchers Boy‘ (written by Nick Turner) and ‘You make me feel like I got in the bath with my socks on‘ (written by Wayne Evans). Mick Barratt was only with the group for three gigs when the group folded. Mick Barratt and Wayne Evans then decided to form their own group which would eventually become “Gaffa“.

The opening of Paul Smith’s Shop in late 1970.
Beeston lad Paul Smith opened his own clothing shop at 6 Byard Lane, Nottingham in late 1970. He went on to grow this into a worldwide empire. Wikipedia entry. On that opening day High Bread Mishap played outside, on the street.

There are more photos from this day on the Paul Smith page.
