Zero-iD

A new wave power pop group 1979/80.

Simon “Sy” Husbands: Keyboards
Jos Burton: Bass
Graham (Grez) Tuck: Drums
Andy Mosely: Guitar

Simon Husbands had been in Nottingham group Mensch from 1971 to 1977. At the end of 1977 he joined Gwaihir playing a blend of prog rock and playing the local Nottingham circuit. In the late summer of 1979 they changed their name to Zero-iD, shortened their songs to a more pop sound with new wave sensibilities.

Jos Burton explains:
Late in 1979, the members of Gwaihir realised that although punk music was not going to last, it had changed the music scene dramatically – which was never going to go back to the sort of stuff they had most enjoyed performing. Hearing the ‘new wave’ music rising in the late seventies: Blondie, The Police, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads etc. the band collectively decided, if they were to have any commercial success going forward, they needed to adapt. This meant dropping the more ‘progressive’ influences of the early 70s and writing shorter, simpler songs that still retained something of their quirky style and humour.

So, with a change of name, clothing and haircuts – but with all the same members: Simon, Andy, Grez and Jos – they set out to become more new wave and less old school. Zero-ID recorded several new songs, all written by Simon who also sang lead vocals, with Andy and Jos on backing vocals. They played several gigs around Nottingham with some limited success but never really found their earlier enthusiasm for this newer music. By late 1980 they all agreed to take a break from performing and unfortunately never got back together“.

They recorded 6 songs which you can hear on Spotify, iTunes and a YouTube playlist here. Some of the Zero ID stuff was recorded at Radio Trent as part of a session for broadcast, some of it at Paddy Flynn’s Rainbow studio.

After Zero-iD came to an end Simon Husbands went on to form English Electric who in turn became Blue Train with success in the USA. More on them later.

Jos Burton continues:
After Zero-ID split up, Jos took a break from live performing which lasted a tad longer than intended. During the 90s he got involved with a covers band and enjoyed it so much he later formed his own covers band with Grez Tuck on drums, two of his own sons: Ben on guitar/vocals and Nathan on keys/vocals, plus Claire Kavanagh on lead vocals. The band is called Super Injunction, and they have been together ever since. Ben Ross took over on drums in 2010, and they are still playing corporate functions and parties all around the region.

Andy Moseley moved away from Nottingham to open a music shop in Kendal. They were selling a wide range of gear, and he even makes his own instruments: guitars, basses, mandolins etc. Andy has been performing in various folk bands around the Cumbrian area ever since. He has recently been writing and performing his own songs in a mix of folk and reggae style, and has a YouTube channel under the name: Mozzy Music @andrewmoseleymoz7270

Grez Tuck continued playing drums in a duet with Bobby John performing in pubs and clubs around Nottingham for several years before moving to France where he has lived ever since. He has been known to pop back to Nottingham occasionally to help out on drums for Super Injunction when Ben Ross is not available“.
