Nottingham group circa 1967

The Slant were a Nottingham group, probably from the Carlton area, who in 1967 were actively described as a Psychedelic beat group. This is the first time I’ve seen mention of a local “psychedelic” group.

August 1967 line up:
Anthony Richards – Drums (19)
Jet Coleman – Bass (20)
Chris Green – Vocals (24)
Jim Wilkinson – Guitar (24)

Their manager was Brian Dunnicliffe (24), a clerical worker of 11 Western Boulevard. Chris Green had been in The Captives in 1966. Jet Coleman would join blues rock outfit “Hogweed” in 1970 with future Gaffa drummer Mick Barratt.

The group were involved in an incident at a club on Carlton Road that made the newspapers in Nottingham. The 1967 “Summer of love” brought with it, not just the breakthrough music that fed into the development of studio recording and the hippy and classic rock of the late sixties and early seventies but the more open use of drugs, particularly in this year LSD and Marijuana. It was in that climate that there was raid on the Cornhill Club.

Brian Dunnicliffe also managed a group called “The Progress” whose name suggests they too were moving with the current trends into a more psychedelic sound and were probably from the 67/68 era. It could be possible that they were the same group “The Slant” before or after a name change.
