Spasm were a Clifton based punk group, some going to Fairham School. Tony, Gary and Simon had been in a previous school based band called GBH. They got new drummer Colin Agar and changed their name to Spasm playing a few covers and a few of their own numbers. They played the Imperial, the Hearty Goodfellow and the Sandpiper along with Some Chicken, The Party, Berlin and Don Drain (Donnie Johnson of the Drains). They recorded at Paddy Flynn’s studio on St James’s Street.
Pete Clark, who took over the drummers seat with Some Chicken after Bob Fawcett left, remembers:
“I remember Berlin and Spasm with Tony Tylines (Tony Thomas – Guitar and vocals) who eventually became a drummer. They gave me a Spasm badge. “We’re the new band” they said. They were about 16 and I was the youngest in Some Chicken and they took to me. They supported Some Chicken a couple of times“.
This list of Nottingham punk bands will give them context.
Tony Thomas would later drum for The Reactors and later forged a career as a producer in House Music.
