Line up:

Jim Pringle (lead guitar)
John Pownall (rhythm)
Bill Spencer(drums)
Ron Kent (saxophone)
John Pownall later took the stage name of Sammy Jay. In a facebook post he outlined a little history of the group.
“One of the first groups I worked with was ‘Shane Wyman and the Senators’. The first group was ‘The Imps Skiffle Group’ with Al Harpo James’s sister. Must have been around 1957. Al must have been and about 13 at the time. His sisters boyfriend wasn’t very pleased when I said I was leaving to join ‘The Tall Boys’ rock ‘n’ roll group. The singer, Alan Trout was tall and so was his brother Kenny who played lead guitar. I played Bass with Bill Spencer on drums. Bill said to me that the Senators were looking for a drummer and did I want to go with him to see if they could use a rhythm guitarist. Got the job and my goodness, it was a step up. Playing at bigger venues with all the girls screaming for Shane Wyman (Terry Penn). Only recently found out he is no longer with us. Wanted to get in touch with him but too late! Anyway, Graham Wyvill kindly sent me the photos and I am the little squirt with the glasses under my original name, John Pownall. I had forgotten that Brian Stanley played Bass. I even went to school with him at Berridge Road. If I remember rightly, Brian went off to Grammar school, clever boy, but Brian didn’t you get sent back for chatting up the girls. Ha! Ha! Well, he was a good looking lad. That’s what I heard so correct me if I’m wrong Brian. Ha! Ha! But then I had a car accident, left the group and joined the army 61/62 for 8 years. We had a Battalion Beat Group and played together till I bought myself out in 69, to start entertaining”.
Brian Stanley and Terry Penn moved on to form Danny Carson and the Senators. From there Terry Penn played with Rockin Ron’s Combo, The Artful Dodgers, The John Smith Affair, Whichwhat and Terrapin. Ron Kent dropped the sax and became the lead singer for Rockin Ron’s Combo.
Bill Spencer moved into jazz. He is still working as of 2024 in the Beeston Big Band.
