The Rock and Reggae Festival first took place in the summer of 1979 sited on The Forest close to Hyson Green in Radford. A collaboration of musical styles it was a way of keeping racial harmony in good spirit and it certainly did that. It was also a showcase for local bands and artists to strut their stuff in front of the local inhabitants and it was free too. It grew in stature and by the early 1990’s had attracted some bigger name bands nationally but always kept the local connections. The festival became more than a musical event and due to a few problems and a shift in emphasis by the promoters plus the reluctance of the council to keep the funding going it came to end in 1994 and subsequently was called the “Music, Arts, Festival and Fair”, a family oriented event with a proposed entrance fee.
Here is the all important lists of acts. A very incomplete list at the moment and one that will probably have mistakes, missing many, but a reference all the same.
On Saturday 22nd July 1978 there was an Anti-Nazi League march from Market Square to The Forest where four acts entertained the assembled crowd. This may well have been a predecessor and catalyst for the first Rock and Reggae.

1994
The aftermath. A new festival started in 1994 called the “Music, Arts, Festival and Fair“.
This was the first event under the name of “Music, Arts, Festival and Fair” and the first with an entrance fee. The “Rock and Reggae” is still mentioned in newspaper articles and it is possible it was actually still Rock and Reggae by name but I don’t think so.
The photo below is most likely from 1994. It is double exposed but the festival can be clearly seen.
