Purple Haze, January 1969

At the end of 1968 a group was formed in Holbeach, Lincs called Purple Haze by David Stubbs and Robert Shortland. It is likely that they chose the name from the famous Jimi Hendrix single from 1967. They may have started as a six piece but in January 1969 they were a five piece comprising of:

David Stubbs: Lead Guitar
Alan Naylor: Lead singer
Robert Shortland: Drums
John Winch: ? Probably Rhythm Guitar
Bryan Johnston
: Bass Guitar

They covered the rock and pop songs of the times. An article in the Spalding Guardian 3rd Jan 1969 announces their arrival.

They gigged in the nearby town of Spalding and the local area.

1970

1971

By 1971 they had become a four piece with a different line up:

Kevin Ward: Lead Vocals
David Stubbs: Lead Guitar
Robert Shortland: Drums
Bryan Johnston
: Bass Guitar

They were playing covers that ranged from the Nashville Teens, Status Quo, The Who, Led Zeppelin to Martha and the Vandellas. Mainly playing as a support act they were on the bill with the likes of The Herd, Sons and Lovers & Edison. They had started to write their own material with Kevin writing the lyrics and the group the music and they always had had plans to record a demo disc. Whether this ever happened we might never know. Info from the article below.

1972

Kevin Ward got married in January 1972.

By the end of 1972 the story of “Purple Haze” disappears into the sunset.
