THE RARE ONES
JIMMY PAYNE SOUND
Nottingham based singer who played with The Rare Ones in 1966 and then formed his own Jimmy Payne Sound. He may have later played with a later incarnation of The Carpetbaggers circa the late sixties. From then he fronted bands in the 70s,80′ and 90’s

From the scant info I have I think his real name was Paul Barron and his stage name was Jimmy Payne. The photo was from a Facebook post on the Old Clubland Acts group. He may well have roots in Awsworth, Notts. His first two bands were The Rare Ones & the Jimmy Payne Sound.
Both, The Rare Ones and the Jimmy Payne Sound played on the Notts, Lincs, Derbyshire circuit and supported The Who, Unit 4 Plus 2, The James Royal Set and The Gass. Locally they paired up with Volume 4, Sons of Adam and Chesterfield group The Blueberries. In between the change from The Rare Ones to The Jimmy Payne Sound they were described as “The Rare Ones Soul Band” and The Jimmy Payne Sound were described as a six piece so it is fair to say they played the soul set that was very popular in mid sixties Britain.
Some venues they played were BMARC Social Grantham, British Rail SC Grantham, Le Discotecheque Grimsby, Selston Matthew Holland School, Heanor Town Hall, White Hart Lenton Nottm, Dancing Slipper West Bridgford Nottm, Anchor Hotel Ingoldmells Skegness, Lake Rendezvous Club nr Lincoln, Casino Leicester, CO-OP Ballroom Lincoln, Grantham Drill Hall, Sherwood Rooms Nottm, Rainbow Rooms Nottm, Calypso Club Nottm, Retford Town Hall and The Dungeon Nottingham.
