Music Box

Nottingham group 1967-1969 who became the highly successful Paper Lace in 1970.

Phil Wright joined a group called Music Box at the end of 1967. The line up of the group was:

Phil Wright – Drums
Cliff Fish – Bass guitar
Roy White – Guitar
Dave Manders – Guitar

They did Beach Boys and Four Seasons covers and gigged 7 days a week mainly in the north, a lot in Manchester and when they played in Newcastle they were sometimes billed as a “Manchester group”. Roy White was a writer who would start to write some of the early self penned Paper Lace material. There were other groups called Music Box at the same time, one in particular, a duo who played the Cornwall/south west area. They played regularly at clubs in Manchester including Embassy and La Scala and had a residency at Tiffany’s in Rochdale. When in Newcastle they played The Nursery House WM Club, Lindisfarne Social Club, Wallsend, Felling Social Club, Felling and La Dolce Vita in Newcastle, a club that included a large cabaret lounge with seating for 500 and an illuminated glass dance area in front of the stage.

At the end of 1969 Mike Harper joined Music Box from The New Formula and in January 1970 they changed their name to Paper Lace.
