Nottingham group circa 1978 formerly the Stewart Carr Band.
Formed at the end of 1977 Malibu were originally known as The Stewart Carr Band. The line was
Nigel Stone: Drums
Neil Thompson: Bass guitar
Andy Wilson: Rhythm guitar, Lead vocals
Chris Thorpe: Lead guitar
Stewart Carr (Luke Warm): Guitar
They must of had an association with the Malibu Dog bowl Skate Park on Derby Road which opened at the beginning of 1978 as they chose the band name “Malibu”, sang a song about skateboarding and used the clubs logo on their record sleeve. Maybe the club stumped up the cash. The Malibu club is covered here. (Later. I haven’t finished that yet)
They released a single on the local “Cleverly Bros” label, recorded and produced by Paddy Flynn. The two songs were “Skateboarding” and “Billy (The Kid)”. They played gigs around the country and secured a residency at the Imperial on St James St. Although writing most of their own material they did cover live Eric Clapton’s Motherless Children which was actually a cover of a blues gospel number written by Blind Willie Johnson in 1927. Hear Eric’s version here. The Malibu single could be well described as power pop and, to my ears anyway, “Billy (The Kid)” has a slight “Steve Miller Band” sound.
