Nottingham/Birmingham group 1969
Jaded Lemon were a short lived four piece group in 1969 who recorded at Codolar studio in Nottingham and released a very small run (200) of a single called “Car Park / A Child’s Lullaby” which was described as a demo disc and released on “Round Records”.
They were led by Geoff Ellis who wrote the songs. Geoff was from Bulwell in Nottingham and was a teacher at Whitemoor Junior School and he was represented by Mr Neale of Sutton-in-Ashfield. His band mates were all from the Birmingham area.
This story is repeated on my page about the Codolar studio.
I am indebted to Bob Lyons for this record who runs the very excellent website Seventies Sevens (A site for seven-inch record labels of the 1970’s).
The “local story” newspaper article in the Nottingham Guardian also reviews the single, maybe a little harshly, complaining of it being “crowded with gimmicks” which is hardly the case. It was a demo disc after all.
The song “Car Park” is something that today might be described as British popsike with a slight “Granny takes a trip” vibe to it with the kazoo’s.
The B side “A Child’s Lullaby” is as it suggests a gentle lullaby with a slight feel of Simon and Garfunkel, but does suffer a little from sibilance on the vocals.
I haven’t heard of anything else to do with Geoff Ellis so I presume it was a one off attempt at stardom. Because his band members were from Birmingham maybe the practicalities of keeping the group together were a reason for its disappearance.
