Jackie and the Laytons

Mansfield group from the mid to late 60’s

Tony Penny joined the group around 1965. He remembers:
“I joined and played drums for JACKIE AND THE LAYTONS. who were a one family band consisting of two sisters one played bass and one who sang, a brother and a dad who was the roadie. A photo exists. I tell you what I have got, I’ve a Jackie and the Layton’s photo and we all stood with dark red suits on, first suit I ever had, in height, going in height order, really corny like, you know”. (This photo is still lost somewhere at the bottom of a drawer)

1965. They were playing regular gigs at the Flying Scotsman in Retford. Another of those huge pubs of yesteryear it has now shut.

A couple of gigs are documented on Dec 11th 1965 and Jan 15th 1966 at the 76 Club, Burton on Trent. http://www.76club.org.uk/ (website now gone).

1966. A gig at Ranby Camp which is an army camp.

1969. Grantham Rock n Roll star Vince Eager who was on the clubland circuit by the late sixties had a gig with Jackie Layton as a singer.
