Gina Birch was born in Nottingham in 1955 and when moving to London in the mid seventies, studying at Hornsey College of Art, she met Ana da Silva and formed punk/post punk band The Raincoats in 1977. After various line up changes they became an all female band in late 1978 with Slits’ ex-drummer Palmolive and violinist Vicky Aspinall releasing their debut album in November 1979 on Rough Trade records.
