Singer Derek Smith was from Bobbers Mill, living near the Wheatsheaf pub, and had been in local beat group “The Chunks”. He then became “Carl” in “Carl and the Starlighters” with Wayne Ford joining him, from The Mysteries, in early 1965. In June 1965 Bob Todd (from The Mysteries) and Ray Wood joined prompting a name change to Carl Pagan and the Heathens.
