Boat Club (Venue)

The Boat Club. West Bridgford rock history. By Stephen Howard.

The Boat is a rowing club by the banks of the river Trent next to Nottingham Forest F.C. on the West Bridgford side of Trent Bridge with a long and proud history. It opened its doors to live music in 1962 and became a favourite among bands and fans alike.

The boat clubs in the 19th century when, unlike today, they almost dwarf the Forest football ground.

The Boat is one of the three boat clubs (middle of the three) situated next to each other, the other two being the Brit and the Union. Both the Brit and the Union had live music, particularly in the sixties and the Brit can boast having both Pink Floyd and The Who play there but it is the Boat that is best remembered having kept the live music night going throughout the sixties, seventies and into the eighties. It had, pass through it’s doors, some of the great 60’s and 70’s rock bands, local groups and some pioneering punk and new wave bands too. It looks like a who’s who of the late sixties rock explosion with legends like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull and a decade later The Sex Pistols and U2 strutting their stuff on the tiny stage to a couple of hundred fans. Being a Bridgford lad, I went to many a gig there. A hot and sweaty, loud evening of beer and live music. Now just a memory, it is another reminder of when live music was cheap, plentiful and still the preserve of the youth generation.

For a list of gigs, I am using, as reference, the book “Down at the Boat” by Keith and Juliet Atkinson & Tony James. Foreword by Andy Smart (Evening Post). Going through the local newspapers can help but most of that work was already done for the book, I’m sure.

This great book does have some spelling mistakes, a few inaccuracies, some missing gigs and probably some gaps that it would be difficult to fill in but it is still an important document. Through my own research I have been able to rectify some gigs and comments, and add a few too. In particular, my knowledge on Notts bands can help to uncover and illuminate some of the unknown or forgotten groups.

The letter at the back of the book by Eggy is gold. I knew Eggy, is he still around?, as I’m sure many others did. As much as this website is about the groups and musicians who made the music, the fans reflect back the energy and joy and Eggy is a perfect example of a “rock fan” of old.

History

Keith Atkinson came to Nottingham from Durham University and at the turn of the sixties took up a teaching post at Toot Hill School in Bingham, Notts. He was also a member of the rowing club at the Boat. At the school he met fellow teacher, Skegness born Ray Crane who was a jazz trumpeter. The rowing club was struggling financially and Ray, who was raised in Nottingham, suggested to Keith that some live music might help bring in some revenue. Keith, who later married Celia, set to work with other club members preparing the room and the first night was launched on 4th November 1962 when Ray Crane’s Jazz Band took to the stage. Ray who also played with the local Mercia Jazz Band, Mick Gill’s Imperial Jazzmen and the Leen Valley Jazzmen and had recently formed his own group. In a time when jazz was still a force in live entertainment Ray’s band held residence at the Boat until he was spotted by Bruce Turner and he left to take up full time musicianship with Bruce Turner’s Jump Band. Ray went on to have a life long career in music. A recording of Ray Cranes Jazz Band was made in early 1963,possibly at the Boat, by Alan Gilmour and in theory still exists possibly at Nottingham University. See more about that here.

In the early sixties, if waning elsewhere, jazz still had a strong following in Nottingham. Bill Kinnell’s Jazz Club was thriving at the Dancing Slipper in West Bridgford, Ken Allsop’s Rhythm Club held their nights at the T.B.I. on Trent Bridge and the Town Arms also had Riverside Jazz nights on the other side of the bridge so it was fairly natural for the Boat to keep this trend going. When, after Ray Crane left for pastures new, Richard Hallam, who had been in Ray’s group, took over the residency over with his own “Richard Hallam Blues Band” in late February 1963 and played regularly through most of that year. This use of “Blues” in the name was more in keeping with a jazz group rather than the purist use that would come to the fore in a couple of years. Other jazz acts appeared that year including Sandy Brown, Arthur Coyne (Kevin Coyne’s older brother), Tony Jackson, Cecille and Bob Wison.

It was in the spring of 1964 when a change of direction in the musical landscape took hold and Rhythm and Blues became the new sound in the clubs of Britain. Local Nottingham group Blues and Roots became the house band at the Boat for three years. In those three years, now celebrated national groups started to appear, Steve Windwood, John Lee Hooker and the Groundhogs, Alexis Korner, The Artwoods with a young Jon Lord, Alex Harvey, John Mayall, Brian Auger and the Trinity, Geno Washington, Chris Farlowe and Rod Stewart with the Shotgun Express. All these and more entertained the lucky punters who could get in. There were two other rowing clubs next to the Boat in the mid sixties, and the Union and the Brit soon started to put on entertainment of their own.

As the British mid sixties scene blossomed, Leeds group The Dawnbreakers became regulars at the Boat during 1967 playing almost every week. Local soul act Tiny Davis A Go Go Show also had regular weekend slots and the national bands kept on coming. It was around this time that Keith Symons booked the groups for the Boat as well as the Beachcomber Club in town. He also managed Nottingham soul group Robert Hirst and The Big Taste. The Beachcomber had Jimi Hendrix, Cream, John Mayall and many soul acts and at the Boat Keith managed to move from the soul acts to the new blues and rock names that were to be the future and for five years or more he attracted many classic bands. The Action, Family, Long John Baldry, The Move, Graham Bond and local heroes The Jaybirds appeared after changing their name to Ten Years After, keeping the fans in touch with the changing times. Friday, Saturday and Sunday every week there was something to see and hear. By 1968 the sixties revolution was in full swing and, the soon to be, huge names started to appear. Jeff Beck, Captain Beefheart, Jethro Tull, Eric Clapton, King Crimson, Tyrannosaurus Rex with Marc Bolan and in April 1969 a fast rising Led Zeppelin made their first appearance at the Boat. By the end of the sixties the Boat was well established as a rock club and it kept this identity for the next decade. You can hear broadcaster John Holmes talk about the “Beach” and the “Boat” and hear an archival interview with Keith Symons at Fragments of Rock.

1971. Led Zeppelin’s 2nd visit to the Boat.

A steady mix of local groups, national acts and a rock disco kept the sounds rolling and by the time, the now world famous, Led Zeppelin came back to do a thank you gig in 1971 it was impossible for the crowds to get in. Lined up to Trent Bridge, many hundreds sat on the banks of the river Trent to savour the atmosphere and listen to the band through the night air. In their early days Supertramp and Dire Straights, who would both become giant supergroups of the seventies and eighties, passed through their doors, such was the calibre of bands that the Boat would attract. Leaving school in 1974 it was a natural destination for me, I only lived twenty minutes walk away, and I would find myself watching such rock bands as Nutz, UFO, Sassafras, Motorhead, Strife, Stray and Trapeze plus a host of local groups like Gaffa, Limelight, Zacariah and Art Fairlure. The still relatively unknown Sex Pistols played there in 1976 and during the punk and new wave era a few bands of note played there but by the early eighties the heyday of the Boat was over and it closed in 1982.

Rock fan “Bert” struts his stuff as rock group Fumble play the Boat in 1974 replacing the billed act Trapeze.

1975. Trapeze, the rock band now remembered for featuring Glen Hughes who later joined Deep Purple, were regular visitors and featured as one of Radio Trent’s first recordings and broadcasts from the Boat. It was later released on CD.

Recorded on 13 September 1975 live at the Boat Club in Nottingham for a UK live radio broadcast featuring tracks from their four mid-1970s albums Medusa (1970), You Are the Music…We’re Just the Band (1972), Hot Wire (1974), and Trapeze (1976). The CD includes a 12-page booklet with rare photos, biography and liner notes from lead guitarist Mel Galley.

We were playing large 10-20,000 seater venues in the southern states where we had a strong following. One of the highlights I guess, was playing the Cotton Bowl in Dallas with The Stones, The Eagles and Montrose. Although we played smaller venues when returning back home, it was good to play venues like The Marquee and The Boat Club where there was always a great noisy crowd and good rocking atmosphere. This recording was made just before we decided to take a break. Our record contract had finished and we wanted time to write new material. It was one of the last gigs by the four piece of Dave, Pete, Rob and myself. Hope you like it”. Mel Galley 2003

Although it may true to say it never recovered its previous glory, and by that I mean that great 60’s and 70’s first wave of live amplified pop and rock music, the Boat opened its doors intermittently and again in the 21st century. Opening for a short period between 1999 and 2002 it attracted a new range of groups and today it still has occasional gigs.

In 2025, there is still much discussion about whether the boat clubs will be demolished to make way for a new stand at the Forest football ground. This decision seems to sway from one outcome to another. Football has it’s heroes, and I saw many, but the Boat had many too and it sits nicely in the memory. Now, however, although still operating it is in danger of becoming a forgotten relic of rock’s golden hour. In my list of “Nottingham music blue plaques” the Boat is assured of it’s place.
