Blues and Roots

Blues and Roots

Nottingham Rhythm and Blues group, early and mid sixties featuring:
Dave Sharp – Guitar
Mel Thorpe – Tenor Sax
Chris Smith – Piano
Les Shaw – Drums
Geoff Pearson – Bass
Drayton Porter – Guitar (Replaced by Dave Sharp circa Oct 1964)

The times were changing and Blues and Roots ushered in the rock era after jazz had ruled through the Fifties on Trentside. They became the first major band to take up a residency at the Nottingham Boat Club, playing there every Friday night over a three-year span.
Dave Sharp recalls: “We supported every big group that came to the city – Manfred Mann, Georgie Fame, Rod Stewart, The Kinks, Spencer Davis…”. “Like all bands, Blues and Roots eventually broke up and I played in a lot of local bands, including Cisco from 1974 to 1978.”

Four songs for a demo session were recorded.

All Night Worker – written and recorded originally by Rufus Thomas
Leavin’ Here – written in 1963 by Motown songwriters Holland–Dozier–Holland.
Let the four winds blow – written by Antoine (Fats) Domino, Dave Bartholomew
Red Pepper – Instrumental. Writers unknown by me.
