MI Five

Early sixties Nottingham group

Their story is told from this newspaper cutting which I now can’t remember where I got it from. I’ve written out the text for easy reading.

Look Out, You Shadows

Better look out you shadows, for the M.I. 5 are on the prowl, and one day they hope to get right to the top of the hit parade, just like you. This Musically Inclined 5, with an average age of only sixteen, are already making a name for themselves, and have a number of regular engagements including one at a Bulwell club each Monday night.

The Musically Inclined 5, who entertained at a “twist and jive” evening organized by the Bulwell British Legion and held in the Percy Andrews social club on Saturday night, proved a big attraction once again, and about 150 young people were present.

The M.I.5 are a very young group – one is still at school and three others only left last June – but they have a rare talent, and should make a big name. The guitar players are Ian Rowe (lead), Gordon Berresford (rhythm) and Bobby Dean (bass) and Neil Rowe is the drummer. Vocalist is Keith Gordon, who appears under the name of Grant Millard.

All the boys attended the Ellis School, where Mr. Gordon is English teacher, and they got together to form the group before they left. Now they have £500 worth of equipment, and have regular engagements every week.

But their education has not been neglected – before leaving school they took G.C.E and R.S.A examinations in at least four subjects.

Interesting to see the record player and records being played through the amplifier of what looks like a radio. Interval entertainment?
