Way Ahead Magazine

A music magazine based in Nottingham that was launched around the turn of 1976 by Tim Minnitt and Dave Brett. Tim who had worked and written for the “Nottingham Evening Post” and Dave Brett who had written for “Splinter”, “Grass Roots” and the “Nottingham Voice” met in 1975 and agreed a new Nottingham magazine was needed.

Tim: “The raison d’etre was that we both felt that there was a need for a good quality local music magazine. There was just the two of us at the Tavern but Dave knew Mick Daley from college and he came on board to help with the printing which was done by Harry Tipton at Ultraprint next door to the Test Match at  the time“.
“The aim was to produce a new magazine every two months. That obviously failed at some stage or else the total would have been in excess of 30. The last issue was no.21 and came out in summer 1981. It was of tabloid size.”

It covered the national scene but more importantly didn’t ignore the local scene in Nottingham. It has proved to be a valuable resource and has a resonance with me as I saw almost all the local bands that are covered. Dave would later go on to open the Way Ahead record shop and the very successful ticket agency. More coming later but this page will be for the magazine only and here are a few covers for now.

More coming later………….
