They were a late sixties Harrogate based band who had in their ranks a young Harry Stephenson who later moved to Nottingham and be in a succession of bands including The Brothel Creepers, Plummet Airlines, Left Wing Rednecks and The Last Pedestrians. Much more on Harry later.
Junkyard Angel were led by John Fozard who had previously been in The Tropical Boot Company. Harry Stephenson was in Junkyard Angel for about a year in 1968/69. They would cover the music of Free, Spooky Tooth and Jethro Tull. When Harry headed for Nottingham in 1969 to study Junkyard Angel carried on and are described by Bob Thomas on Pete Bradley’s rollbacktheyears website.
a photo of ‘Junkyard Angel’ (circa 1969) …… John Fozard (guitar), Gordon Beattie (bass), Malcolm Coleman (vocals … now living in Cambridge) & John White – drums (ex Sect, Hogline, Boston International Showband, Glitter Band & now with Midnight Train).
After a number of personnel changes ‘Junkyard Angel’ later changed their name to ‘The Zenith Band’.
I sang in a ‘Zenith Band’ line up with John Fozard – guitar (ex Black Diamonds, Crawdadies, Tropical Boot Company, Lamb Brothers & Company & Junkyard Angel), Brian Duffissey – bass (ex Hogline & now with ‘Midnight Train’), Harvey Ellison – tenor sax (ex Hogline, Root & Jenny Jackson, Boston International Showband, Glitter Band & now living in London doing studio sessions/working in The Power of Soul), Terry Suffield – trumpet (ex Hogline, Tropical Boot Company, Lamb Brothers & Company & now living in New Zealand I hear), Geoff Stead – drums (ex Kokomos, Tropical Boot Company, Lamb Bothers & Company, Jimmy O Show, Sanctus, Love Circle & The Memphis Roadshow).
Sorry but I don’t have any photos of ‘The Zenith Band’ (a great band), but John Fozard might be able to help again.
(thanks again to Bob Thomas for this fantastic archive material)
