The Midnight Shift

In 1966 Nottingham group The Beatmen who had released two singles on Pye Records came to an end. Three of them with the addition of Roger Lymn and Dave Quickmire became The Midnight Shift.

The line up was:
Roger Lymn, Paul Mountain, Dave Quickmire, Bill Moseley, Barry Heald.
They released one single on Decca, gigged locally and in Germany where it seems it became a floating line up of whoever was in and around the clubs at the time. Nottingham’s John Landon was one such. The Decca Promo Biography tells their story:

Dave Quickmire had been in The Jaybirds before Ric Lee took the drummers job. Roger Lymn had been in Nottingham groups Halfway There, The Pussyfoot 4 and The Sons of Adam.

It tells of a later line up. I can only assume that the original band were slowly breaking apart and those that wanted to still play and earn money carried on under the group name. This line up played in Germany in 1966.

Eric Wrixon (Keyboards), Nigel (Nig) Smith (Bass), John Landon (Drums), Barry Heald (Sax).

John Landon was from Nottingham and had played in Halfway There, The In-Crowd and would later join The Clockwork Toys.

Barry Heald was an original member and had also been in the original Beatmen.

Irishman Eric Wrixon was a founding member of “Them” famous for launching the career of Van Morrison. He was also in Belfast R&B group The People recording for a compilation album in 1966. While based in Blackpool, Wrixon left the band in mid-1966 to join another Belfast band, the Wheels, with whom he also recorded. Eric Wrixon went on to also play with the early line up of Thin Lizzy.

Nigel (Nig) Smith was also from Ireland and would later record with Northern Irish psychedelic rock band Andwella’s Dream who were formed in 1968. He eventually moved to Nottingham where he still plays.

The Midnight Shift – Living Fast – B Side – Decca 1966

The Lyrics to “Living Fast” by Bill Moseley.

This may not be the first time
and it won’t be the last
my way of life is changing
from now on I’ll be living fast
I’ve found what I was missing
staying so true to you
the loving and the kissing
that I could never get from you
you lied and cheated
knowing I would always stick with you
but now you stand defeated
I’ve found another love that’s true

I’ll tell you what I’m thinking
I’m going to cut my roots?
oh my ship is sinking baby
from now on I’ll be running loose

This may not be the first time
and it won’t be the last
my way of life is changing
from now on I’ll be living fast
I’ve found what I was missing
staying so true to you
the loving and the kissing
that I could never get from you
