John Holmes – Radio Nottingham broadcaster and local band scene supporter.
His groundbreaking radio show on Radio Nottingham “Eztravaganza” starting in 1970 was a beacon of light for us youngsters (I was 13 when it started) finding out about the “underground” scene of rock music. He was a great supporter of local bands too.
He wrote an autobiography in 2020 called “This is the BBC Holmes Service”.
Essex born John Holmes writes about his childhood, family, move to Nottingham, University days, the sixties Nottm gig scene, his days down the pit and his move to broadcasting with Radio Nottingham where he hosted a great new “Underground music” programme, supported local bands and met many people along the way. Days in the pub, anecdotes from famous stars, the memories of Nottingham in the sixties and seventies are particularly poignant as many of these places and the people who were there are now gone. Because I am a Nottingham man with similar interests to John I warmed to it easily particularly the seventies which was my time as a teenager.
He also has a youtube channel called Fragments of rock
